The Unrefined Preacher Part 2

Unprepared' is a myth – Trevor Timbeck

Today we are going to continue on this topic of the unfined preacher, addressing the “vision.”

“Is your palette so unrefined because of your preaching you have to entertain them or get them occupied with your vision?” (Pastor Adrian Rogers)

First let’s look at what it actually means to have “vision” according to the Bible. In Proverbs 29:18 it says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” Some may think this applies to leadership, but a closer look shows it to mean something completely different.

It is true that having a direction to go can be helpful to getting you to where you would like to be, but Proverbs 29:18 is not about having a business or a ministry vision. It is about God’s revelation, dream, or prophecy. Lack of vision therefor is the lack of God’s revelatory word.

I have been in many false churches and the biggest thing they have in common is their visions and plans. The pastor’s preaching is so unrefined they have “visions” for their Sunday Sermons, rather than expository preaching of God’s Word. They mishandle God’s word in order to fit their vision and imaginations. Or the leadership “castes a vision” onto their congregation, you can read about it here:

Some examples of these visions are; feeding the poor, capital campaigns, community meals, potlucks and fellowship after the services are emphasised over the preaching of God’s Word, emphasis on experiences over sound doctrine, getting rid of church language, such as “testimonies” or “being born again,” getting rid of the language of church services into “worship gatherings,” instead of sanctuary you have the “worship center,” preaching on slogans such as, “Love Jesus the Most,” “Jesus is More,” “Imagine,” small group meetings are highly encouraged not for educational purposes but for relational purposes, vision casting, purpose driven, social justice, liturgy, or traditions.

An unrefined preacher’s mission is to just except anyone and everyone for who ever they are, without biblical unity or true biblical reconciliation. Unrefined preachers never preach about false teachers or false movements in Christianity, or they ignore passages of the Bible because they think they are irrelevant for today.

Unrefined preachers have only a few messages. They preach the same topics over and over, because they have no idea how to handle God’s Word. They focus on their own preferences and their own ideas. They usually do not communicate the full Gospel and try really hard not to offend people with God’s Word.

An unrefined preacher will scoff at Bible prophecy and not find the Word of God sufficient for a Christian’s life. They will put the Bible aside to preach on a man made book. The unrefined preacher will say things like; the Bible is just allegory, or that certain doctrine is not for today, we are progressing as a society, so that doctrine does not apply. They may twist God’s Word into a pretzel to accommodate anything they want to promote.

The unrefined preacher does not have a biblical perspective to what it really means to have a Proverbs 29:18 ministry. When it says that “the people perish” where their is not vision means almost exactly what it says. It means “to loosen” and thus to “to expose or uncover.” The people start to live with out restraint. The unrefined preacher will lead their congregation into sin by ignoring or avoiding certain parts of God’s Word. When people are not constrained by the Word of God, they will start to go their own way and ignore God’s directives. Eventually, an unrestrained church will be loosed, and ignore the way of life, of Romans 6:23, for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus or Lord.

If you are in a church that has an unrefined pastor, run as quickly as you can, far away! It has been my experience that these men do not care to take correction or they explain away the Word of God. They are to be marked and avoided.

Romans 16:17-18

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

What does it mean that without vision the people perish?
